Stillness
Stillness is different for a child. It is more tactile. The colors and sounds melt together. The atmosphere is strong. Sometimes it feels boring, but for most creative children, and that means most children, they feel comfortable occupying themselves.
No compulsory conversation. No pressure to run errands. Work can wait. Music does not need to be on to busy the mind. On Sunday afternoon, there is nothing worth watching on television. It is off. Your friend had to go shopping with his mom. Your parents are entertaining guests.
4:30 pm. The sun is starting to beam in through the windows, leaving slashes of light on the blue carpet; the rest is diffused through the white curtains. The wall clock ticks away. I sit on the floor and run toy cars into one another. A few make impossible flips. To emphasize the action, I make sounds. pssshhhtttt chhhhuusssshhhh zzzzzoooookkkkkk.
I look up. I make this memory. Somehow I know this feeling is special, that it won’t last forever.
